Raising Children in a Technological Age
The inspiration for exploring this topic came from a combination of personal revelation about my own technological habits and from professional and parental forethought about my future. One does not need to look far to see the intrusion and dependence of technology in all areas of the average first-world life. And yet, our society could not have advanced in the leaps and bounds it has over the last several decades if it weren’t for that same technology. I wanted to explore some of the research in this area to try and help people to find a healthy balance and to have a better understanding of what sort of psychological impact this technology has on humans, and specifically, developing children. I have heard many different opinions about the impact that technology has on society, both positive and negative, and realized that this is yet another area that has no strict right or wrong answer. However, there are patterns and correlations in the research that have been recognized, and the information needs to be applied on a case by case basis.
For a parent trying to raise a child in this environment, there are clear benefits and drawbacks to having this much technology available for your children to use. The annotated bibliography website I compiled (linked below) is intended to be a guide for those parents as they navigate this unprecedented time in history, and we experience first-hand the effect that technology has on the psychological development of children.
